Composites
Flevoland has a strong cluster of companies specializing in composites, super-strong, lightweight compositions of fibers and resins. The development of new materials and applications is their core-business. With their often unique products, many of these businesses have been able to build up a successful presence in many parts of the world.
Examples of applications Flevoland’ companies are involved in:
- The Joint Strike Fighter, where the use of composites can lead to a significant reduction of the weight of these fighter planes,
- Highly-innovative ABN AMRO yacht which participates in the Volvo Ocean Race,
- Light weight bycicles for Taiwanese cycle company Giant’s European production facility in Lelystad,
- Other projects in civil engineering, aerospace, automotive and shipbuilding.
The Automated Composites Manufacturing Centre ACM-TC, part of the National Aerospace Laboratory, is specialized in research and development of automated manufacturing of advanced composites structures. The centre brings together the complementary research capabilities of research centre’s, universities and specialized small enterprises. Its vision is to enhance the competitiveness of its members by conducting applied research and carry out development programs up to the level of full scale prototypes. Support is also available from Delft University of Technology, the Universities of Twente and Eindhoven as well al other institutes in The Netherlands.
