Research and Development

Flevoland has an impressive number of leading facilities for Research and Development. Many of these institutes are renowned all over the world. They actively encourage spin-offs and support the use of their advanced technologies by other companies. These businesses are often located at advanced business parks in the direct vicinity of the R&D facility, offering a direct link to the available research.

The main R&D facilities in Flevoland are:

  • National Aerospace Laboratory
  • Animal Science Group/Wageningen University
  • Dronten University of Applied Sciences (CAH Dronten).
  • NAK, Dutch General Inspection Service for agricultural seeds and seed potatoes
  • National Service for Archaeology, Cultural Landscape and Build Heritage (RACM)

National Aerospace Laboratory
The National Aerospace Laboratory NLR carries out applied research on behalf of the aviation and space sectors. NLR performs research to develop new technologies for aviation and space travel, not only from a scientific perspective but also for the application of this research in industrial and governmental sectors. NLR employs approx 700 people at locations in Flevoland and Amsterdam. NLR has a number of specialized research facilities such as wind tunnels which it operates together with its German sister organization, DLR.

Animal Sciences Group
The Animal Sciences Group of Wageningen University, Lelystad, is an internationally renowned knowledge organisation in the field of animal production and human and animal health. It also develops and produces vaccines and sensitines (specific diagnostics). Core activities are scientific and practice-based research, academic education and generating (animal) production systems and innovations. In Flevoland and elsewhere in the Netherlands, the Animal Sciences Group has extensive facilities for research and production.

National Service for Archaeology, Cultural Landscape and Build Heritage (RACM)
The National Service for Archaeology, Cultural Landscape and Built Heritage (RACM) is responsible, with others, for managing the Netherland‘s heritage both above and below the ground and under water. Whenever historic, archaeological or cultural landscape values are at stake, the RACM takes the lead in ensuring the conservation, statutory protection, conservation and investigation of the country’s heritage. RACM has a modern facility for maritime archaeological research in Lelystad, Flevoland.

NAK, Dutch General Inspection Service for agricultural seeds and seed potatoes
The NAK is an independent foundation with a board of growers, breeders, traders and users and has inspecting propagating material as its main task. NAK carries out this inspection task under supervision of the Minister of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality. The Minister has also commissioned NAK to carry out a number of phytosanitary tasks. NAK has stimulated innovative developments and introduced new techniques including a PCR method to identify various potato diseases. NAK also investigates the possible use of digital techniques.

Dronten University of Applied Sciences (CAH Dronten)
CAH Dronten offers students professional programs in food production, trade and logistics, leisure and animal management and the rural and urban environments. Students specialise in business administration and the agribusiness, rural development, animal production and management, horticulture and arable production, with professional profiles ranging from real estate brokerage via equine studies to international agriculture.

Geomatic Business Park (GBP)
An alliance of businesses and organizations focused on developing and marketing innovative products and services based on remote sensing data and similar technologies. Geomatics Business Park provides state-of-the-art technology and facilities for knowledge intensive companies in this growing market.
