Life Sciences: human, animal and green
Flevoland has an impressive number of leading facilities for Research and Development in the field of Life Sciences, divided in human, animal and green:
Human
WUR
University of Wageningen operates in the domain of ‘healthy food and living environment’. Its mission is to explore the potential of nature to improve the quality of live. Issues within this domain are almost never exclusively natural, technical or social by nature. There are always multiple, usually synergetic, approaches and possible solutions. Wageningen UR therefore fosters the unique interaction between the natural and social sciences. Both sets of disciplines are part of a coherent package of research, education and services. This integrated approach offers additional possibilities for the effective application of expertise in policy or in practice. One such application is Showcase Flevoland in which several partners work on projects which will provide solutions to the world’s nr. 1 challenge: To feed the growing world population we must produce two times more food and simultaneously reduce our ecological footprint with a factor two.

Immuno Valley
Immuno Valley is a consortium of over 30 government, research and corporate partners in the Amsterdam-Utrecht-Flevoland region. Focussed on detection and control of infectious diseases in man and animal from a one-health perspective. This strong public private partnership enables faster innovation and valorisation by connecting research groups with market demand.

TuBerculosis Vaccine Initiative (TBVI)
TBVI is an independent non-profit foundation that facilitates the development of new vaccines to protect future generations against tuberculosis. We financially support and bring expertise to an integrated network of over 40 universities, institutes and industries to develop more effective, safe vaccines that will be globally accessible and affordable. Research conducted by our mostly European based network has already resulted in promising vaccine discoveries.

Pepscan
Pepscan is a biopharmaceutical company, successfully tackling the challenges of protein mimicry. Many proteins exert their biological activity through relatively small regions of their folded surfaces. The challenge is to reproduce these bioactive surfaces by much smaller peptides. Pepscan’s unique technology platform addresses this issue via the design and synthesis of conformationally constrained peptides with a well-defined 3D spatial structure resembling the native functional protein surface.

CVI (part of WUR)
The Central Veterinary Institute of Wageningen UR is a knowledge organization with an international reputation in the field of animal health. The core activities feature scientific and practice-based research.
The Central Veterinary Institute is an independent research institute and the national reference laboratory that, operating in the field of veterinary science, contributes to protecting the health of animals and humans in the Netherlands.

Artemis, Research Institute for Wildlife Health in Europe
Artemis is a multidisciplinary institute dealing with both infectious and non-infectious causes of wildlife disease. The institute has adequate laboratory space and state-of-the-art facilities, including a pathology centre, imaging possibilities, and an experimental animal centre with biosafety level 3 capabilities, all dedicated primarily to wildlife health issues.

Schothorst Feed Research
Schothorst Feed Research is an independent research institute that is anchored in the Dutch animal feed sector. The goal is to improve the competitive position of the clients. The intensive and long-standing cooperation with animal feed producers forms the basis for the drive to build a bridge between applied research and its practical implementation. This is expressed through structural attention to the conversion of qualitative feed concepts into quantitative feedstuff-related data. In this manner the various links in the animal feed sector are supported with knowledge of feedstuffs, additives, nutrient requirements and the relationship between nutrition and health. For example: the research results and feed advice have an impact on more than 15 million tons of animal feed per year. Schothorst Feed Research avails over a multidisciplinary team of scientific researchers (nutritionists, veterinarians, biochemists, microbiologists and statisticians) and consultants for research and consultancy.

Animal Sciences Group (part of WUR)
The Animal Sciences Group of Wageningen University, Lelystad, is an internationally renowned knowledge organization in the field of animal production and human and animal health. It also develops and produces vaccines and sensitines (specific diagnostics). Core activities are scientific and practice-based research, academic education and generating (animal) production systems and innovations. In Flevoland and elsewhere in the Netherlands, the Animal Sciences Group has extensive facilities for research and production.

NAK Dutch General Inspection Service for agricultural seeds and seed potatoes
The NAK is an independent foundation with a board of growers, breeders, traders and users and has inspecting propagating material as its main task. NAK carries out this inspection task under supervision of the Minister of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality. The Minister has also commissioned NAK to carry out a number of phytosanitary tasks. NAK has stimulated innovative developments and introduced new techniques including a PCR method to identify various potato diseases. NAK also investigates the possible use of digital techniques.
